The combination of type 2 diabetes and obesity continues towards epidemic proportions. There is now overwhelming evidence that bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment of type 2 diabetes in the morbidly obese. The effect that bariatric surgery has on the prevention of type 2 diabetes is less clear due to the longer follow up required and the need for a control group. Jacob reviews the current evidence.

Jacob Chisholm is an upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon with an interest in weight loss and metabolic surgery. Jacob has presented at both national and international obesity meetings in addition to authoring multiple publications in leading obesity journals including Obesity Surgery and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. A particular interest is the deleterious impact of obesity on liver function and how obesity surgery can reverse these changes. Jacob is a member of professional upper gastrointestinal and obesity surgery bodies OSSANZ, IFSO and ANZGOSA. Jacob continues to be involved in the provision of bariatric surgery in the public hospital setting and performed the first sleeve gastrectomy at Flinders Medical Centre in 2010.
