Multiple bacterial species inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract. Variations in the gut microbiome have been associated with abnormal host metabolism, including dyslipidaemia and diabetes mellitus. It is possible that changing the gut microbiome may offer a way to improve host metabolism. This presentation will discuss the evidence for the role of the gut microbiome in influencing human metabolism.
