Cure of type 1 diabetes can be only achieved in a small fraction of individuals by whole pancreas transplantation or islet transplantation. In the majority, however, best-possible glucose control remains the therapeutic goal. All people with current type 1 diabetes require insulin, however, there are some oral medications which can be used to improve glucose control. These include metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors.

In this session, the evidence for efficacy of oral agents in type 1 diabetes will be discussed, as well as their potential dangers.
