The role of a Credentialled Diabetes Educator is not well documented in managing individuals with diabetes before, during and after a natural disaster. (#61)
There is currently no data or practical guidelines specifically for diabetes educators to assist people with diabetes before, during and after a natural disaster. In recent meetings with diabetes educators from the Gold Coast and Brisbane, an insulin company sales representative and a blood glucose monitor sales representative it was established that it is unclear how to distribute equipment and supplies to individuals with diabetes and diabetes educators at the time of a natural disaster.
Furthermore, it is demonstrated that little focus is given to preparedness for a natural disaster, nor is it included as part of education for people with diabetes. There is not currently a natural disaster kit available for people with diabetes and their families in this country.
As a result, people with diabetes and diabetes educators may experience a lack of preparation and planning. It is therefore important that people with diabetes are encouraged to problem-solve and use preventative thinking.
The aim of this presentation is to encourage and inform diabetes educators and other health professionals of the role that a diabetes educator can play before, during and after a natural disaster.
