Mastering Diabetes – Developing a Suite of Resources for Schools, Preschools and Families About Managing Type 1 Diabetes (#56)
INTRODUCTION: As at April 2015, there were 2,965 young people of school age (3 -18 years old) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) living in Victoria¹.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE: Young people with T1D have the right to be able to actively and fully participate in all that their school experience has to offer, to achieve their academic and experiential potential. Providing comprehensive, accurate and useful information about diabetes at school, has to-date occurred in a variety of ways across Victoria.
OUTCOMES: In conjunction with key clinical experts, Diabetes Victoria has undertaken a coordinated approach to develop and make available quality resource materials for schools and families about T1D.
Strategic discussion/consultation meetings between key stakeholders demonstrated a gap in quality diabetes at school resource availability.
Using Diabetes UK website and information packs as a framework (with permission), Diabetes Victoria has worked to develop a suite of resource materials for schools and families.
Information is structured around a website portal plus hard copy information packs that will be available to all interested parties.
The Diabetes UK content has been adjusted to reflect the Victorian context, to ensure that the information provided is both relevant and accurate to the Australian setting.
Focus testing of the revised content has been undertaken by paediatric diabetes health professionals, teachers and parents, representing all ages and stages of children with T1D across the range of education settings.
The website will go live in August 2015 and the information packs will be ready for distribution at the same time.
IMPLICATIONS: This suite of resources will provide practical, specific and targeted information together with helpful tips and strategies, to ensure that every child with T1D is safe and supported during the school day as well as during school related extra-curricular activities.
