A/Prof Yanchuan Shi (Yan) is a medically-trained scientist, currently the group leader of the Neuroendocrinology Group at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Her research focuses on the neuroendocrine regulation of food intake and energy homeostasis, adipose tissue thermogenesis and metabolism, insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis, and the crosstalk between the brain, fat tissue and pancreatic islets. She is also investigating how non-caloric dietary salt influences these critical processes.
A/Prof Shi obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Medicine in China. She came to Australia as a WHO Fellow at IMVS/Royal Adelaide Hospital for a year before being awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) to commence her PhD in bone research. She received her PhD in Medicine from UNSW in 2006. She started her post-doctoral training at the Eating Disorders Research Laboratory within the Neuroscience Division at the Garvan Institute and was promoted to the Group Leader of the Neuroendocrinology Group in 2014, leading her independent research.
As an overseas-trained medical doctor, she spent a few years post-PhD requalifying for her Australian medical licence. In February 2012, Dr Shi received her Australian Medical Council (AMC) Certificate, allowing her to practice medicine in Australia. She is currently a Conjoint Associate Professor at St Vincent's Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, UNSW Sydney.
